Life With/After Cancer

Embracing Your New Normal

Cancer can change things around. Whether you’re a survivor, still undergoing treatment or a loved one of someone affected by cancer, your world has suddenly shifted. There’s so much to deal with, both emotionally and physically.

You’re adjusting to the same life in a changed environment and circumstances. You might be questioning yourself and struggling with the transition of what life with or after cancer should be like for you.

It’s okay. These changes don’t define who you are. They are just a way to grow, recover, heal, and find your purpose. This is your opportunity to dig deep, reflect, and move forward with hope, inspiration, and contentment with the Embrace Cancer Community.

Your Path to Renewal

The aftermath of cancer often brings unexpected challenges and opportunities. This phase is about embracing change, nurturing resilience, and rekindling hope. It’s a time to reassess priorities, deepen connections, and rediscover yourself.

We focus on four key areas to support you in this phase of your journey:

Self-Care for Recovering Patients and Relatives

Recovery from cancer is a physical and emotional journey, from exercise, nutrition, and rest to emotional therapy and spiritual healing. This extends not just to the patient but to the family and loved ones too.

The children, spouse, partner, parent, friends – they are all going through the same emotions, battling with grief and fear and trying to find the best way to help their loved ones.

At Embrace Cancer, we understand the far reaching effect of cancer for everyone involved. We offer guidance on managing the lingering effects of treatment and rebuilding your strength. This includes tools for dealing with fatigue, changes in physical appearance, and the emotional toll of the cancer experience.

For relatives, we provide help to replenish your emotional reserves after the intense caregiving period, prioritizing your own needs without guilt, finding support systems, and rediscovering interests that may have been set aside during the cancer journey.

Managing the Fear of Recurrence

The possibility of cancer returning can be a persistent worry for many survivors and their loved ones. This fear is completely normal. However letting this fear control you can impact your present, preventing you from enjoying what you have and moving forward.

Learn how to recognize these fear triggers, deal with past and present traumas, and develop effective coping strategies. Our resources will guide you in identifying the triggers for these fears and developing coping strategies.

Find techniques to help you stay grounded in the present, effectively communicate your concerns with healthcare providers and loved ones, and find a balance between necessary vigilance and living fully.

Working Through Grief for Relatives

For those who’ve lost a loved one to cancer, grief can be all-encompassing. Yet, even in the depths of loss, it’s possible to find meaning and a path forward. We offer compassionate guidance for this challenging journey.

We work through the unique aspects of grief after a cancer loss, acknowledging the complex emotions that may arise. We’ll explore healthy ways to express and process your emotions, from journaling to support groups. You’ll learn about creating meaningful rituals to honor your loved one’s memory and legacy.

Most importantly, we’ll guide you in rebuilding your life while keeping your loved one’s memory alive, helping you find a way to carry their love with you as you move forward.

Rediscovering Your Identity

Coming close to death or facing the possibility of death can shake your sense of self. Whether you are a cancer patient or a loved one, being touched by cancer changes you in ways only a crisis can. You might out of the experience a different person than you were.

We understand. Cancer is a life changing experience and you need time to rediscover yourself, reconnect with your core self, and shape your identity moving forward.

We’re here to help you on this journey and the process of merging your cancer experience into your life story – without letting it overcome you. You’ll explore exercises to identify your values and what gives your life meaning in this new context. We’ll help you set new goals that align with your current abilities and aspirations, acknowledging that these may have shifted.

Importantly, we’ll focus on recognizing and embracing the strengths you’ve developed through your cancer journey, using these as a foundation for your evolving identity.
